Purpose
To provide clinical and research training experience to enable graduates of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellowship to serve as pediatric physiatrists in academic research centers.
Clinical experiences
The primary location for the fellowship will be Children’s Hospital of Richmond for the clinical rotations. This will include a rotation on the Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit and the Transitional Care Unit for inpatient care. Consultation services will be provided also at the VCU Medical Center Pediatric Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Clinical experiences will include baclofen pump evaluations and trials, Botox injection clinic with and without anesthesia, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, Spina Bifida, EMG, pediatric urology, pediatric orthopaedic surgery and pediatric neurosurgery and amputee.
The expectation is to become clinically competent in all of these areas.
Research
The fellow will be assigned to Drs. Paul Wehman and Brian McMahan of the Rehabilitation Research Center to develop their research goals and objectives.
