Abstract
Musculoskeletal conditions are the leading causes of disability in people 18-64 years old. Disorders of the back and neck are the chronic diseases most likely to have an impact on the disability process. Within the past decade these disorders have caused major
reevaluation of government policies that establish benefit and back pain causes an abnormal distribution of disability benefits. This paper provides a discussion of the economic and life-style impact of chronic pain as it relates to work and disability and recent SSA
funded research in chronic pain assessment.
