PM&R SIG Officers Meeting

May 26, 2004, Noon-1 p.m.

Introduction of the 2004-2005 Officers:

Co-presidents: Aaron Jones, Rich Kunz
Vice-president: Charlotte Cockrell

Co-secretaries: Marcia Redwood, Rachelle Toman

Financial Report:

  • The Alumni Fund covered all of this year's activities.
  • We are anticipating a $500 award for the upcoming year.
  • We will be sending a thank you card to the Alumni Fund.
  • The PM&R Department continues to hold $250 for our use.

Calendar of Upcoming Events:

Club Day: Occurs in at the end of M1 orientation (August?)
We will organize/staff a table for this annual fall event.
The poster from last year is in Dr. M's office.
We will create flyers with: mission statement, officers' emails, website address,
call for class reps and list of upcoming events.
We can also distribute physiatry brochures.

Club Picnic: Occurs in late summer/early fall
Lecture Series Ideas: Start in Sept./Oct.
Have Dr. Cifu speak early on “What is PM&R?”
Resident Panel – why they chose PM&R, their lifestyle etc.
Specialty Areas: Pain Management
Sports Medicine
Pediatrics
Geriatrics
Inpatient (inc. TBI and SCI)

  • Will soon include a picture of the officers and be updated with our contact information.
  • Currently includes the mission statement with space for links to upcoming events.
  • We are looking into the possibility of providing links to PM&R residency programs as well.

Research Opportunities in PM&R:

  • Students can get involved with departmental research by contacting Dr. M.
  • Resident's Research Day in late spring showcases the active PM&R research.

Additional PM&R Opportunities:

M3 students can take advantage of PM&R work at the VA when they are doing their Neurology and/or Psychiatry rotations.
M4 students can perform an AI in the department as well as choose from several PM&R electives.

Dr. Tim Silver does sports medicine for local events like boxing and martial arts competitions. There may be possibilities for student involvement as early as this summer.

Possibilities Unlimited provides therapeutic recreation activities. The contacts are Dan Slater and Michelle Mead. (Charlotte offered to gather information on this opportunity in July.)

The Residents’ Library, housed in Dr. M.’s office, is available to students. It includes many books and the last two to three years of several PM&R related journals.

The departmental didactic learning sessions are also available to students.
